President Joe Biden has marked the 50 millionth COVID vaccine jab being administered in the United States – reassuring Americans every great program faces difficulties in its early days.

“The story of this vaccination campaign is like the story of everything hard and new America does, some confusion and set backs at the start, and then if we do the right things we have the right plan to get things moving,” he said.

Vice President Kamala Harris has also visited a Washington DC pharmacy, encouraging black Americans to receive the jab as vaccine hesitancy is proving to be a problem.

“There’s so many reasons to get vaccinated right, so we can all get back to seeing all of our family members and being together,” she told a visibly nervous woman receiving the jab.

Vaccine makers are looking to boost efficacy against new strains of the virus, with a third vaccine potentially just days away from FDA emergency use authorisation.

The Johnson and Johnson jab does not require refrigeration only requires one shot for 72 per cent protection.
