Iran’s military began its annual air defence exercises on Wednesday with a display of ground-to-air missile systems.

Dubbed ‘Modafean Aseman Velayat’ (Defenders of Velayat Skies) the drills were designed to test missile, radar and reconnaissance systems and would involve fighter jets, bombers and drones, especially home-manufactured equipment, the West Asian News Agency (WANA) reported.

On Saturday Iran said it was self-reliant in its defence and had no need to go on a weapons-buying spree as a United Nations conventional arms embargo was about to expire, despite strong U.S. opposition.
