Firebombs were thrown at police in Thessaloniki during a student protest against a proposed education bill on Wednesday as politicians debated the legislation in parliament.

The bill, which has been proposed by the ruling and conservative-leaning New Democracy party, would see a decades-old ban, which was enacted in the aftermath of the fall of the military dictatorship, on police entering university grounds be lifted; officials argue that the ban had been exploited to organise violent protests and criminal activity.
