On 30th July 2020, Hong Kong authorities barred 12 pro-democracy candidates from the upcoming Legislative Council election. A day later on 31st July 2020, Hong Kong Chief Executive, Carrie Lam announced the postponement of the highly anticipated, watershed Legislative Council election by a year amid the resurgence of COVID-19 cases in the territory. Two weeks later, the city police arrested several prominent pro-democracy advocates including media mogul Jimmy Lai and, social activist Agnes Chow and issued arrest warrants against 6 Hong Kong overseas-based democracy activists. Is Hong Kong’s limited democracy under siege? Has China’s ‘Iron Curtain’ finally descended on the city? Will there be a future for democracy in the city, long regarded as a bastion of liberal values and freedom in the region?
