Highways have been washed away and dozens evacuated as a one-in-10-year flooding event lashes a 1,000 kilometer stretch of the Western Australian coastline.

Officials have asked residents to stay updated with emergency warnings and advice and a severe weather warning has been issued for damaging winds, heavy rainfall and abnormally high tides in lower west, south west, parts of central West and south coastal districts.

Over 30 people were rescued by helicopter yesterday after being trapped by rising floodwaters on the North West Coastal highway.

The low pressure system will move southwards towards Perth from Geraldton today, bringing a large rain band over the city.

Approximately 30 to 50 millimetres of rain is forecast with isolated falls of up to 100 millimetres.

Damaging winds averaging 60 to 70 kilometres per hour with peak gusts to around 100 kilometres per hour are possible in coastal areas.
