There have been clashes between protesters and riot police in Belarus following claims by the country’s president Alexander Lukashenko that he has won a landslide election victory.

Main streets in the capital Minsk were sealed and police used rubber bullets, tear gas and water canon in attempts to dispel demonstrators.

A state-run exit poll also claimed that the country’s authoritarian leader had won the general election by a wide margin. Political opponents have said there has been widespread election fraud.

Alexander Lukashenko has been in power for 26 years. He’s been battling a wave of discontent over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, the economy, and human rights.
