After a long hiatus, students have returned to the streets of Bangkok demanding political reforms, democracy and change. Among others, they would to see an end to the intimidation of pro-democracy campaigners and activists by the authorities, the drafting of a new constitution – one that will give power back to the people, the dissolution of parliament – including the government-appointed Senate, followed by fresh elections. For the first in the country’s history, the students are also calling for the reform of a highly revered and sacred institution in the country – the monarchy. It’s a potentially seditious move which carries a prison sentence of up to 15 years in prison for those found guilty of insulting the King. But will their demands for change and democratic reforms be met by the government? Or will the country see the eruption of violence in the streets of Bangkok once again?
