Heavy rainfall brought flooding to the streets of Mumbai, India’s financial capital, on Wednesday, disrupting traffic across the city.

In a video posted on social media, people can be seen struggling to wade through water which was almost waist-deep in parts, with many vehicles and motorbikes partially immersed.

Train services across the city were also disrupted due to the flooding of tracks, local media reported.

Annual rainfall is essential in India as rains support two-thirds of the 1.3 billion total population living in rural areas who rely on farming. But, excessive rainfalls cause problems like floods, landslide and water-borne diseases.

Mumbai is also struggling to contain a growing COVID-19 outbreak, with its total number of cases reaching 1,87,778 as of Sept. 22.
