The Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said the threat of coronavirus ‘remains grave and serious’, as he confirmed a number of regions – including London – will move into the Tier 2 category from midnight on Friday.
In addition to the capital, Essex, Elmbridge, Barrow-in-Furness, North East Derbyshire, Erewash, Chesterfield and York will move into the next level of restrictions from 12.01am on Saturday.
It means households will no longer be able to mix indoors, including in pubs and restaurants, and people are being advised to avoid public transport.
