Five years later: How September 5th, 2015, became a crossroads for the migration crisis

5 Years ago int September 2015, thousands of migrants who had been stuck in limbo in a station in Budapest set off on foot for the German border. For them, it was the start of a new route to the heart of Europe. For the European Union, it was a challenge to its core principles. By the end of 2015, more than a million people had sought refuge in the EU, with many making the long trek from Turkey, across Greece and the Balkan countries, all the way to the German border.
