Hong Kong is regarded as one of the world’s richest cities with 96 billionaires controlling almost 300 billion of the city’s wealth. But Hong Kong is also one of the most unequal cities in the world in terms of income levels and the wealth gap is widening between the rich and the poor.

Today, 1.4 million out of 7.4 million people in the city live in poverty. They live mostly in tiny subdivided flats or caged homes due to skyrocketing property prices and the lack of affordable public housing. The situation has been made worse by the current recession and COVID-19 pandemic. Will the poor of Hong Kong be able to survive the impact of the pandemic? And is there a way out of the seemingly endless cycle of poverty?
