For communities along a river near Tangerang, a city west of the capital Jakarta, fears about the coronavirus pandemic have deepened after a deluge of medical waste ended up in the waterway. In May 2020, a wall on the nearby Cipeucang landfill collapsed after the site reached full capacity. Tonnes of garbage including medical waste tumbled into the Cisadane River. Residents who live downstream have reported seeing a constant stream of medical waste items washing up on the banks of the river, which is a vital water supply for the local community.
