Pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong says the idea China’s national security law was a response to protests is not the case, rather it is an excuse to target any politician or activist who advocates democracy.
The national security laws aim to criminalise acts of sedition, secession or activities – including writing or speaking – which the Chinese Communist Party deem to be threatening to its rule.
“National security law is not being used to target any front-line clash or civil unrest,” he said.
“It’s just used to target any politician or advocate for democracy and freedom.”
