With Neil Armstrong’s first step on the moon, America’s race with the Russians had come to an end. Riding on the coattails of the successful Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 missions, America planned to launch its third manned mission to the lunar surface by April 1970. Unforeseen problems occurred that created a life and death situation where the spacecraft and crew were all but lost.
