Health officials in the United Kingdom are warning that stricter curbs may be needed as coronavirus cases reach new highs due to a new, more transmissible strain in the country.
The UK reported 53,000 infections on Tuesday – nearly 12,000 more than the previous record set the day before.
Meanwhile, the EU is buying an extra 100 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, in addition to the 200 million already ordered for its mass immunisation programme.

Al Jazeera’s Rory Challands reports.
