The highly contagious UK variant of COVID-19 has been detected in the Northern Territory for the first time.

A 26-year-old woman who tested positive to COVID-19 earlier this month has been found to have the mutant strain after genomic sequencing was conducted interstate.

The returned traveller remains in quarantine near Darwin, along with all other passengers from the London repatriation flight.

Authorities have assured there is no risk to the public.
