Thousands of protesters blocked the roads in Tamra, an Arab town in northern Israel, on Saturday, following the death of a bystander during a shootout between police and alleged criminals on February 1.

Highway 70 was blocked from traffic as protesters marched through the dual carriageway.

“Hundreds of thousands of weapons are arriving illegally to the hands of organised criminal groups in the Arab society, while the police and other security agencies are allowing it to happen. To the weapons to arrive at the groups who murder our people,” said Nidal Othman, a local from Tamra.

Protesters demanded Israel’s Internal Security Minister and the police take responsibility for the death. Addition they called for decisive action to tackle and prevent other innocent deaths from happening in these communities where violent crime has become the norm.
