US President Donald Trump has issued a pardon to his former chief strategist Steve Bannon, as one of his last acts in office.

The New York Times has reported Donald Trump pardoned Mr Bannon on Tuesday, which was the president’s last full day in office.

Steve Bannon is facing a federal case for allegedly defrauding donors of more than a million dollars as part of a fundraising effort for President Trump’s border wall with Mexico.

An official pardon prevents that prosecution proceeding.

Steve Bannon helped run Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and was a driving force behind much of Trump’s populist appeal and policies.

Although he departed as the President’s strategist early in his term – after criticising Donald Trump’s children – the two have reconnected in recent months as they worked to overturn Joe Biden’s election win.
