Bushfires in Sydney’s west have threatened homes with at least one house catching alight in a blaze.

A fire near Whitehaven Road, in the Sydney suburb of Northmead, has been downgraded to an advice level.

The first major fire danger weekend of the season has seen temperatures exceed 40 degrees across the state.

The home in Northmead has been damaged, but hasn’t been lost to the blaze.

A gusty southerly change is set to hit in the coming hours.
