Nobel Peace Prize winner and prominent Northern Ireland politician John Hume has died aged 83.

The former leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) dedicated himself to ending decades of bloodshed in Northern Ireland and was instrumental to the creation of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.

He took political risks by holding secret talks with Gerry Adams – then leader of Sinn Fein – to lay the foundations for the IRA ceasefire in 1994.
