A mass of jellyfish, collectively known as a “smack,” descended upon the Italian port city of Trieste. Nestled among Croatia and Slovenia, Trieste boasts ancient ruins, and James Joyce wrote part of “Ulysses” there. But these jellies were more interested in the plankton found near the harbor’s surface. Known to scientists as rhizostoma pulmo, they’re among the largest jellyfish species in the Mediterranean.
