A survivor of Saskatchewan’s Marieval Indian Residential School, where the Cowessess First Nation says its discovered 751 unmarked graves, recalls burying a young student who died. As Dan Spector explains, the Indigenous man says the deaths of residential school students were a well kept secret, because people were too afraid to say anything.

Canada had about 140 residential schools, and thousands of children are estimated to have died while living in cramped, abusive conditions. As Eric Sorensen explains, nearly one-third of the students who died or went missing weren’t named, and calls are growing for the federal government to release the records from every school.

“Pension?” is what Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett texted to Independent MP Jody Wilson-Raybould, in response to a tweet calling out the prime minister’s reconciliation efforts. Mike Le Couteur explains why Wilson-Raybould, who is Indigenous, aired the message to the public, calling it “racist” and “misogynist.”
