Egyptian archeologists discovered more than 80 sealed coffins on Monday in the ancient necropolis of Saqqara, a burial ground that is also home to one of the world’s oldest pyramids, adding to the 59 sarcophagi they previously announced in early October.
In photos and videos published by antiquities authorities, the discovery showed finely painted sarcophagi, as well as a collection of coloured and gilded wooden statues.
The coffins are around 2,500 years old and have not been opened, said a statement by the ministry of antiquities and tourism.
Earlier this month, Egypt showcased a set of newly discovered coffins belonging to priests and clerks from the 26th dynasty nearly 2,500 years ago.
