Animal lovers in Manila had their pets blessed via a drive-through ceremony on Sunday to celebrate the feast of Saint Francis, the patron saint of animals.

A row of vehicles lined up outside as pet owners waited for their turn to have a priest sprinkle holy water on their canine companions.

The day is also known as World Animal Day, and it went ahead despite restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The drive-through pet blessing was organised to ensure that pet owners just stay in their cars to observe physical distancing in public places during the pandemic.

The Philippines has the highest number of coronavirus cases in Southeast Asia.

The Health department on Sunday reported 3,190 new cases, bringing the total to 322,497, with 5,776 deaths.
