The US special envoy to Central American countries is meeting leaders in the region, promising to address the root causes of undocumented migration.
Experts have warned that the conditions that generate large numbers of asylum seekers – violence, extreme poverty and corruption – will not be solved overnight.
US border authorities apprehended more than 171,000 people last month, many of whom were unaccompanied minors.
