One of the first things US President Joe Biden did when he took office was to change former President Donald Trump’s immigration policy. He suspended construction of Trump’s border wall and rescinded the state of national emergency at the US-Mexican border. Now he is expected to release families seeking asylum within 72 hours of their arrival on US soil, after they pass a COVID-19 test and a background check.
The new policy has sparked hope in the hearts of refugees who have waited for months and years to gain the chance to apply for asylum in the US. DW’s Carolina Chimoy filed this report from the informal refugee camp in Matamoros, Mexico, just across the Rio Grande from Brownsville, Texas.
