Independent Senator Rex Patrick has questioned Google Managing Director Melanie Silva on whether the ABC and other broadcasting networks have been impacted by experiments run by Google in response to the media code.
He suggested the experiments were “inconsistent” with the philosophy of Google to present a search that best matches the query of the customer.
Ms Silva defended the experiments run by Google saying they were standard and on a small scale impacting no more than one per cent of users.
She admitted the experiments looked at the “value” between google and news publishers.
“I would have to double check the details, my understanding is that there were several arms aimed at understanding that value between Google and news media businesses.
