An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter scale shook Turkey’s Aegean coast on Friday, Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) said.

The death toll stands at 12, and the number of people injured stands at 419, according to the latest update from the AFAD.

The presidency said that search and rescue operations at 17 collapsed or damaged buildings are still going.

The strong earthquake was felt in both Greece and Turkey. Two people died on the Greek island of Samos, officials there said.

Survivors were pulled from the rubble by rescuers as people poured onto the streets in panic in Izmir, Turkey.

The tremor could be felt as far away as in Istanbul and on Greek islands and high tidal waves were seen in both countries.

The quake also triggered flooding in some coastal regions.
