‘Farcical’ not to move forward with Trump’s impeachment trial: Joe Biden

President Joe Biden says the Senate impeachment trial of his predecessor Donald Trump must move forward to avoid the optics of being “farcical” – but admits it’s “probably not likely” to actually achieve a conviction.

“I don’t know what is likely to happen, it’s probably not likely that you get 17 Republicans to change their view and convict an impeachment,” he said.

In the sit-down interview alongside the first lady, President Biden said adamantly he was “not looking for any retribution”.

“I think it’s important that there be certain basic standards that people at least are able to see what happened and make their own judgements.”

“My job is to try to heal the country and move us forward.”

President Biden said it would make a “mockery of the system” to now say no, the trial should not go forward.
