Spain became the first country in Western Europe to register 500,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Monday, after a second surge coincided with school reopenings.

Health Ministry data showed a total of 525,549 cases, up from 498,989 on Friday, with 2,440 infections registered in the past 24 hours. The country does update its data retroactively, so the latest numbers could still be revised.

Unlike in the March-April peak, however, hospitals have enough beds to treat COVID-19 patients. Eight new deaths were also reported on Monday, bringing the total to 29,516, but the rate is far less than its peak when daily deaths routinely exceeded 800.
