Saudi Arabia faces calls to boycott G20 over human rights abuses

The G20 summit of the twenty wealthiest nations and other major emerging powers is hosted by Saudi Arabia this year. But the country has repeatedly faced international criticism over human rights concerns. Ahead of the online forum, members of the European Parliament urged Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and the president of the European Council Charles Michel to boycott the event. But the world faces the unprecedented challenge of coordinating an effective response to the coronavirus crisis and the distribution of a vaccine to end the economic fallout from attempts to stem the spread of COVID-19 infections.
